Festival of the North in Murmansk |
The Festival of the North is an annual sports event in about 20 winter
sports that takes place in the towns of the Murmansk region in March and April
since 1934. The first Murmansk Ski Marathon took place on March 31, 1974. The
Murmansk Ski Marathon is usually held on the first Sunday in April in Murmansk
and accompanied with traditional reindeer competitions. It seems to be the peak
of the North Festival. It is really worth to see or even to participate! Beside
it you can watch Murmansk city which is the largest seaport in the Russian Far
North, and fully deserves its title as the "Gateway to the Arctic". More than a
dozen merchant, fishing, icebreaking, research and military fleets make their
base here. The city has a lot of places of interests like the First Nuclear
Icebreaker "Lenin", the Naval Museum, the Ship Company Museum, and the
Oceanarium as well as the Regional Historical Museum, the Art Museum and the
Folk Art Center. One of highlights of the city is Second World War Memorial
"ALESHA". The majestic monument for The Defenders of the Arctic was installed on
a high hill above Murmansk in 1974 in memory of the War; a figure of a watchman
with a rifle of a height of 34 meters, which is visible almost from any point of
the city.

Proposed program
|
Day 1, 4th of April, Friday: Arrive in Murmansk airport. Meet up by a
car. Transfer to a hotel and check-in.
Day 2, 5th of April, Saturday: Breakfast at the hotel. Watching Saami
games with reindeer races in Dolina Uyuta. In evening a skating possibility in
the Ice Palace. Overnight in the hotel.
Day 3, 6th of April, Sunday: Breakfast at the hotel. Watching Saami
games, reindeer races and ski Marathon. The closing Celebration. In evening a
skating possibility in the Ice Palace. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 4, 7th of April, Monday: Breakfast at the hotel. Take a public bus to
Kirovsk city at 08.00. Arrival in Kirovsk around 13.00. (Bus ticket is 600 RUR).
Check-in at a hotel upon arrival. Ask reception to call taxi for you to come to
the Snow village. (Taxi costs around 150 RUR). The Snow village is a big
construction with sculptures and labyrinths being made entirely of ice and snow
- natural and pure materials. Illuminated with colored lights corridors, halls
and rooms take us into a fantastic world of winter tale, where Santa Claus and
Snow Maiden welcome guests. You can have fun sledging down from a snow hill or
to be busy with snow carving. Nearby there is a small reindeer fold with four
reindeers. If it is open then for small fee (around 200 RUR) you can come inside
and see reindeers, to touch them and make photos. Call taxi to come back to the
hotel. Overnight at the hotel.
Day 5, 8th of April, Tuesday: Breakfast and check-out. Pick up from the
hotel at 09.00. Transfer to Snow Village which is a start point of the tour.
Changing clothes and
start to drive in Khibiny mountains to direction of a mountain hotel. Check in.
Lunch. After lunch a snowmobiling tour in surroundings of the hotel. Dinner in
evening. Sauna. Overnight at the hotel. (L,D) Daily distance: 60 km
Day 6, 9th of April, Wednesday: Breakfast. Start to drive by a snowmobile
via several passes. Wilderness lunch at a campfire. After lunch we snowmobile to
the East Petrelius Pass (883,3 m) to and coming back to Snow Village via
Kukisvumchorr Pass. We are at the Snow Village around 18.00. Transfer to
Murmansk and check-in at the hotel. (B,L) Daily distance: 60 – 70 km
Day 7, 10th of April, Thursday: Breakfast at the hotel and check-out.
Transfer to Murmansk Airport for departure.
